noble FAQ's

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) defines youth peer support as connecting youth and young adults with mental health conditions, substance use conditions, and/or a history of systems involvement with “young adults who have experienced similar challenges and completed specialized training to learn how to use their experience to support others.” As a practice, it is sharing one’s lived and living experiences with mental health challenges or systems with other young people by teens who are ready to share and use their stories for the growth of others.

Peer recovery coaches walk side by side with individuals seeking recovery from substance use disorders. They help people to create their own recovery plans, and develop their own recovery pathways.

Recovery coaches provide many different types of support including:

  • Emotional (empathy and concern)
  • Informational (connections to information and referrals to community resources that support health and wellness)
  • Instrumental (concrete supports such as housing or employment)
  • Affiliational support (connections to recovery community supports, activities, and events)

Therapy is a past-focused discipline that identifies reasons for a person’s feelings and behaviors and offers strategies to handle emotions around specific issues. People typically see a therapist because they have symptoms of a mental health issue and want to feel and function better. Therapy also helps individuals with increased  insight to the roots of issues and problematic thinking with a possible diagnosis.

Coaching focuses on the present and moving towards the future. A peer coach will guide you to make informed choices backed with intentional action towards your goals and the life you want to create. Coaching involves active listening and support but places an emphasis on accountability, motivating you to do the inner personal development work. Coaches do not provide diagnoses and will refer you to additional support if necessary.

Recovery plans and other supports are customized, and build on each individual’s strengths, needs, and recovery goals.

The number of coaching sessions varies based on personal goals, desired outcomes, emotional investment, and self motivation.

You and your Noble One Coach will decide together after an introductory discovery session on the best plan to meet your needs.

The unique relationship between the peer recovery coach and the individual is grounded in trust, and focused on providing the individual with tools, resources, and support to achieve long-term recovery.

People who have worked with peer recovery coaches provide strong testimonies of the positive impacts of peer recovery support on their own recovery journeys. The research supports these experiences. While the body of research is still growing, there is mounting evidence that people receiving peer recovery coaching show reductions in substance use, improvements on a range or recovery outcomes, or both.
